Vija K'tai

The voidbrood designed an auxiliary language since they have no native spoken language.

It now serves as trade language of the Joint Nomad Fleet.

Phonology

The host's lips are fairly rigid and don't cover the front teeth, making bilabial consonants and rounded vowels impossible.

They can produce sounds similar to labio-dentals with the upper incisors on the lower alveolar ridge, but no proper stops. They can also pronounce compressed vowels.

The nasal ‹m› may sound more like /n/, and ‹b› has a fricative quality /b̪ᶹ/ as a result.

The pronunciation of the laryngeals is influenced by the host's pharyngeal jaws.

The bidental percussive ‹d't› is produced by gnashing the pharyngeal teeth, not the main jaw's teeth. The fricative ‹ħ› is also bidental, produced with the pharyngeal teeth clenched.

Allophones

Diphthongs

Phonation

The back vowels are creaky voiced (/ɑ̰/), as are their centralized allophones unless followed by a front vowel or palatal consonant.

The front and central vowels are slack voiced (/i̥/).

There's no standard phonation for the semivowels /ɪ̯/∼/j/ and /ʊ̯ᵝ/∼/wᵝ/ found in diphthongs.

Pitch

Instead of stress, there are two pitches, high (ā) /˦/ and low (a) /˨/. Vowel length is not phonemic, though high pitch is usually longer than low pitch.

Both diphthongs are falling (āi, āu) /˦˨/. Double vowels can be falling (āa) /˦˨/ or rising (aā) /˨˦/.
